Where is Aomori,
and why go?

Aomori forms the northern tip of Honshu, directly across the Tsugaru Strait from Hokkaido. Aomori City faces the bay, while Hirosaki and the Tsugaru area sit farther west.

BASE & ROUTE COMPARISON

Aomori, Hachinohe or Hirosaki? Let the Oirase bus choose the base.

For a short public-transport trip, these are different starting points—not interchangeable hotel locations. Choose the gorge day and its return connection before adding another town.

Aomori Station

City stay + one full Oirase day
CHOOSE THIS IF
You want the city waterfront and a gorge outing without changing hotels.
The trade-off

The bus is a substantial part of the day. Aomori Station and Shin-Aomori are different stops: use the timetable for your actual boarding point.

Hachinohe

An eastern gateway with a reserved outward bus
CHOOSE THIS IF
Your rail route already brings you through Hachinohe and the Oirase trip is the priority.
The trade-off

The specified Oirase-go departures from the station’s west exit require advance reservations, including for rail-pass holders. Do not plan to arrive and join any bus.

Hirosaki

A city-focused stay; a separately arranged excursion

Hirosaki itself is the main interest, not merely a cheap room for Oirase.
The trade-off

The seasonal Hirosaki–Oirase tour bus is not an everyday local-bus fallback. Check operating days, booking deadline and minimum participants before building around it.

WORKED PLANNING EXAMPLE · NOT A REPORTED TRIP

Planning example: 2 nights near Aomori Station, public transport, and an Oirase day between 18 September and 11 November 2026.

OUR PLAN
Use arrival afternoon for Aomori, then reserve the next full day for the gorge. Choose the Aomori-bound return before deciding how far to walk. Keep day 3 for the city and departure. If operations or weather make the gorge impractical, keep a city day rather than improvise a mountain connection.
LEAVE OUT
A Hirosaki hotel move, the Hakkoda ropeway and an end-to-end gorge walk on the same day.
WHY THIS WORKS
Two nights remove a luggage transfer. A shorter walk around a confirmed return stop is more useful than a long route that leaves you on the wrong side of the final city-bound bus. This example does not apply year-round.
